Every year for the last couple of years I try to do a week-long summer vacation. Something memorable that I haven’t done before. Well, at the begin of the year I stumble upon a group of travelers that frequent a music festival in Aruba.
The first trip of the year is officially under my belt. January 2017 brought Mini Me and I to her first out of state gymnastic competition for the season. For this we headed to Allen,TX. I was so ready to get out of town too. I was becoming kind of antsy since my last trip was back in October of last year.
Well the new year is upon us and it's time to set some goals and make some changes. It's what we all do at this time of the year. I know I'm a little late but here is my 2017 bucket list and resolutions.
2017 Bucket List
- Dallas, TX - Traveling with my Mini Me to a gymnastics competition.
- Hot Air Balloon Ride - I really want to do this. Just have to find a nice place to do it.
At the beginning of 2016 I shared my Bucket List. It consists of all the travel related things I wished to accomplish this year. I think I did a pretty decent job at do most of the things on my list. I even was able to add some things that weren't originally on the list. Overall this year has been great and I'm so happy I was ale to experience everything I did this past year.
I figured now would be the perfect time to recap my year and see how it compared to my list.
Jaco Beach is located on the Pacific side of Costa Rica. It's a bustling little beach town and I had the best time. At first I was a little worried about going to a Spanish speaking county. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to communicate because I don't speak Spanish. However after some research I realized that most of the natives actually speak very good English.
A couple of weeks ago I decided I needed to get away before the kids go had to go back to school. So, I planned a short staycation on Ft.Lauderdale Beach.
For those who don't know what a staycation is, it's when you take a vacation and stay locally instead of going out of town. It's something I do every once in a while. It allows me to save money on transportation and it gives me the satisfaction of being on vacation without being too far away from home.
Back in June I took a trip with my daughter to Rhode Island for the Trampoline & Tumbling National Championships. We were there for five beautiful days. We were lucky because we had one entire day to ourselves in between preliminaries and finals to explore. Since this was our first in in Rhode Island our AirBNB host suggested we drive over to Newport and tour one of the mansions. I discussed it with Mini Me and we decided to go check it out.
This is my favorite pic from our Rhode Island trip. While exploring Newport we found a library. Baby girl wanted to go in but we couldn't find an open entrance. We finally figured out it was closed. I carried this pic while trying to find the entrance. This placed reminded us of Alice in Wonderland.
After our little trip to the Devil's Den in Welliston we headed over to the Gulf Coast to check out St. Petersburg. It's hard to believe I've lived in Florida all my life and I've never visited St. Petersburg. So, as part of my goal to adventure to places I've never been, I decided to add it to the Spring break road trip.
Spring is in the air and that mean spring break for the kids. I always try to do a little something with them to help them relax, refresh and get rid of some stress. They're approaching the end of the school year by spring and it could be hard to stay focused as they approach the finish line and.get closer to summer break.
When you think about Florida the natural reaction is to want to visit South Beach. It's one of the biggest tourist attractions in South Florida and every time a friend or family member is in town the first request is "Can we go to South Beach?"
My main purpose for the visit was to go to the Dallas T&T Cup in which my daughter was competing. T&T stands for Trampoline and Tumbling. It consists of 3 events ... Trampoline, Tumbling and Double Mini Trampoline (which is referred to as Double Mini). It's a national competition with thousand of gymnasts from around the country competing. What an amazing experience for my daughter as well as my son and myself.
It's 2016 and just like everyone else I have a list of things I would like to accomplish this year. I thought sharing them with you would keep me on the right track. I decided to throw my New Year resolutions in too. Why not?!
One of my most recent explorations took me to Delray Beach. The kids and I ventured to the Morikami Museum and Japanese Garden. I've visited the garden a couple of years back but I wanted the kids to experience it as well.
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens was one place I passed so many times while going to school at the University of Miami and just never made the effort to explore. Until the other day.
The other day I decided I needed to go check it out. I bought the kids along because I knew it would be a great history lesson.
Travel and exploration doesn't always mean you have to buy an airplane ticket or drive cross county. How many people can safely say they know every inch of their state or better yet their city. Not many I'm sure. All this talk about travel and we think it has to involve going out of the county or state. But the truth is you can find adventure anywhere even in your backyard. There are probably so many places in your area that you still don't even know about. They are waiting for you to explore them. Here's how to find them.
We're constantly changing. Every life event, every person we meet and every decision we make leads us to a greater understanding of ourselves. This includes exploring yourself as well as the world around you. Sometimes exploring yourself can simply mean exploring the world around you. This is what Exploring Shawna means to me. Learning about myself by exploring life and the world around me.
For a couple years my Mom had been telling me about this nice little island in the Bahamas called Bimini that's a short cruise ride from Miami. I can remember her saying to me that one day she'd like to go there.
