A couple of weeks ago I decided I needed to get away before the kids go had to go back to school. So, I planned a short staycation on Ft.Lauderdale Beach.
For those who don't know what a staycation is, it's when you take a vacation and stay locally instead of going out of town. It's something I do every once in a while. It allows me to save money on transportation and it gives me the satisfaction of being on vacation without being too far away from home.
I traveled a bit this year and I earned free hotel nights through Hotel.com. I figured I would try and make this trip an inexpensive one and use them on this trip. I originally wanted to stay at the B Ocean but ended up picking the Hilton Beach Resort instead. It isn't exactly on the beach but it's right across the street which is how most of the hotels on Ft. Lauderdale Beach are. The hotel is gorgeous and my room was beautiful. I was supposed to have a view of the Inter-Coastal Waterway but ended up with a view of the building next door. I was a little disappointed at first but that gave me a reason not to just stay in the room the entire weekend.
I think when you live so close to the Ocean you tend to take it for granted. I ended up spending 2 days in the pool at the hotel even though I was so close to the beach. I know ... makes no sense. Why stay on the beach and not take a dip at least once? I really can't tell you. All I know is it just felt right to float in the pool all day and since it was my vacation to do whatever I wanted I did just that.
Dinner was just in walking distance. There are a hand full of restaurants that are right on the beach. It took me about 5 minutes to walk and find one. Everything was so convenient. I parked my car when I got there and didn't move it again until I was ready to leave.
On one of the nights I was there I met a couple in the elevator who informed me that sea turtles were hatching on the beach right across the street from the hotel. I couldn't believe my luck. This is something that I always wanted to experience and it happened to happen during my stay. So yes, I hurried myself over to see if I could get a glimpse. I am happy to say that after waiting there for about an hour I saw one, yes you read that right, just one little fellow wiggle his way to the ocean. I said a little prayer for him that he survived the journey ahead of him. That was definitely the highlight of my stay. I wish I had pictures to share but the volunteers that were keeping watch wouldn't allow any type of light in the area for fear it would distract the hatchlings.
I had a great weekend. It really helped me relax and get my mind right to tackle the rest of the year. Sometimes all you need is a little recharge and I was definitely able to accomplish that with this mini staycation.
Have you ever taken a staycation? How was is?
