Bimini In A Day

Shawna Miller

For a couple years my Mom had been telling me about this nice little island in the Bahamas called Bimini that's a short cruise ride from Miami. I can remember her saying to me that one day she'd like to go there.

Then one day as I was getting ready for work, I see a commercial about a small ferry cruise that takes you over to the island for a very reasonable price. It sounded like the perfect little getaway. So of course I booked it immediately. And just like that the kids, Mom and I were off to Bimini.

Let me just say I'm so happy we were able to go. It was a great little escape. There were 2 options to choose from when booking the trip. You could stay on the island at one of the resorts or opt to stay on the ship. We opted for the ship.  This option included food for the duration of our trip . It also included a cabin that accommodated 4 passengers. The cabin was small, you could even say tiny, but decent. It had 4 twin beds, 2 of which folded down from the ceiling.

We had to arrive at the Port of Miami at 4pm for departure time of 7pm. The ship was a little on the older side and small but tolerable. As soon as we stepped on the ship it was off to the buffet. Then there was the infamous muster drill. After that we were sailing through the night . It takes about 2 hours to travel from Miami to Bimini.

I'm not going to talk much about the ship. Basically there's only one ferry that I know of that goes to the island. The ship is decent but the food was less than appetizing. Staying on the ship didn't kill us but if I were to go to Bimini again I will make a reservation for one of the resorts on the island.

It was a short vacation but one of the best ones I've had in a while. The kids agree with me on this too. I think it was because we only had one day there and we packed as much in as we could. The island is actually small enough to explore in one day. So this is how our day went.

Wehad breakfast on the ship and then the first thing we did was hit the beach. I've gotta say Bimini has one of the nicest beaches I've been to. The water is a beautiful ombre of blues. It starts off a pretty baby blue and gradually turns into a deep blue. Bimini has that very fine type of sand that's so soft under your feet. The cruise line has a bar on the main beach so food and drinks are available at will. We rented a Clam Shell and spent the first half of the day at the beach swimming, sipping drinks and taking pictures of course.

After the beach we took the free tram to one of the highly recommended restaurants on the island for some conch. You can't go to the Bahamas and not eat conch. I have to say the conch was on point.  This was the first time the kids tried conch and they loved it. We ate a variety of Fried conch and conch fritters. The craft market was not to far from the restaurant so we stopped by and grabbed a couple of souvenirs. This had to be one of the smallest craft markets I've ever seen. I think it only has about 12 shops. Across from the market we noticed the Bimini Museum. We took a peek and were able to learn a little bit of the history of the island which is always a good thing.

As our day was winding down we headed over to the only casino on the island to check out the free pool. It was a pretty huge one and it wasn't crowded like I thought it would be. We hung out there for a while before heading back to the ship to shower and eat. As I reviewed the itinerary I read that there was a bond fire and party that night over by the casino so we decided to go check it out but it was kinda dead. So since we had such a fun filled day we decided to call it a night.

We set sail early the next morning wishing we had more time but we were glad we got to experience this beautiful little island. The consensus was that everyone had a great time. It was a great little getaway that I would be happy to do again opting to stay on the island instead of the ship of course.
