My Day Trip to Newport Rhode Island

Shawna Miller

Newport RI

Back in June I took a trip with my daughter to Rhode Island for the Trampoline & Tumbling National Championships. We were there for five beautiful days. We were lucky because we had one entire day to ourselves in between preliminaries and finals to explore. Since this was our first time in Rhode Island our AirBNB host suggested we drive over to Newport and tour one of the mansions. I discussed it with Mini Me and we decided to go check it out.

We stayed in East Greenwhich which was the most adorable little town I've ever visited. Literally I felt like I was on a movie set. From Greenwhich it took us about 25 mins to get to Newport.

The first thing we did when we got there was stop by the visitors center to see all there was to do there. After some debate, we decided to take a mansion tour and then just walk around and see what we can get into.

Newport Me & Mini Me

We learned there are several Mansions in Newport. It appears the aristocrats of the 1800's use to use Newport as their summer vacation destination. I picked the one I felt would be the most interesting. The Breakers, the summer home of the Vanderbilt family. I remember learning about the Vanderbilts in my high school history class.

The Breakers 2

Let me just say I've never seen anywhere so lavish. You could see that every inch of that place was planned with intricate care. The decorations were immaculate. Baby girl and I tried so hard to imagine living during that time and spending our summers in this house. Oh I'm sorry, I mean mansion.

The Breakers

A little history on The Breakers

They call the mansion The Breakers because it sits on a cliff and during high tide the waves come up and break against the cliffs. The 70 room mansion was built as the summer home of Cornelious Vanberbult. Cornelious made his fortune first in Steamships and then the railroad.  He commissioned architect Richard Morris Hunt in the late 1800's. Hunt built the mansion in an Italian Renaissance style.

Cliff Walk

What to do next

After touring The Breakers Baby Girl and I figured we would just walk around. After just a little bit of walking was stumbled upon the Cliff Walk. I'm trying to gather my words to describe to you just how amazing the Cliff Walk is. It's 3.5 miles of trails that run along the Newport shoreline. Along the path there are pathways that take you all the way down to the shoreline. I don't think I've ever seen a more breathtaking sight. With the encouragement and company of my daughter (trust me I wouldn't have made the decision to walk down to the shore on my own) we broke from the main path and ventured all the way down the cliffs to the shoreline. I'm so glad she talked me into it. That's a memories I think will stay with me and I'm sure with her for years to come.

Cliff Walk 2

Last but not least

After our wonderful walk we found a cute little pizza shop in downtown Newport and had lunch. Actually more like dinner since it was close to 4pm. Then we took a walk and exploring the town. We quickly found out that everything closes at around 6pm so if you're going into town make sure to get there early enough to have enough time to check things out.

We had the best time that day. I have to say this was one of my favorite trips this year.
